All the parallels I’ve found in the two industries
Hey all! Some of you are already aware of my background, but for those of you who aren’t here ya go:

Yes, that’s me and after spending 15 years fully immersed in the multifaceted landscape of the film industry, I made a career pivot! I found the transition to the world of technology intriguing, due to the parallels I discovered between these two industries.
The creative elements that are essential to both film production and software development became a compelling reason for my fascination with the latter field. Here are just some of the many I’ve found. I plan to do an ongoing series that deep dives into some of these but for now, here is just a breakdown:
Storytelling and User Experience
In the film industry, storytelling reigns supreme, driving the narrative to engage and evoke emotions. Similarly, software developers focus on crafting user experiences that are intuitive, seamless, and engaging. This common thread of storytelling and user-centric design became a pivotal point in my attraction toward software development.
Vision and Design:
Having spent years conceptualizing and actualizing the director's vision in the film industry, the transition to software development felt wildly familiar. Both fields demand a blend of creativity, aesthetics, and user-centered design to captivate their respective audiences.
Iteration and Improvement:
The iterative process, fundamental in both film and software, resonated deeply with me. In the film industry, audience feedback often led to edits and refinements. This is similar to how user feedback, testing etc. are important in driving updates and enhancements in software development, leading to a refined end product.
Technical Creativity:
Technical creativity is evident in various fields, not just the two discussed here, from the craft of cinematography, where lighting, lenses, angles, and visual narratives, to the finesse of editing raw footage into compelling stories. Also in the world of special effects, where the boundaries of imagination are pushed through digital wizardry.
On the tech side, the fusion of coding, interface design, and innovative technologies in software development sums up the relationship between tech and artistry. Coding forms the backbone, weaving the fabric of logic and functionality, while interface design dictates the user's journey, blending looks and usability. Innovative technologies continually challenge and evolve this landscape, providing exciting avenues for exploration.
It's this dynamic interplay between the technical precision of cinematography, editing, and special effects in film and the innovative, ever-evolving world of coding, interface design, and technology in software development that captivated and drew me into the enthralling intersection of technology and art."
Adaptation and Flexibility:
The demand for adaptation and flexibility in both industries resonated with my experiences in film production. Directors often recalibrate their creative visions based on constraints or evolving circumstances. Similarly, software development demands adaptation to changing technological landscapes, user requirements, and market trends—something I intimately understand.
My role as a Unit Production Manager required adept problem-solving skills. Not only did I manage potential cast and crew issues, but I also navigated the unpredictable nature of weather and locations, which posed constant challenges. The ability to adapt and recover swiftly was pivotal to my success in steering dozens of projects to completion.
The common ground between these industries ignited my curiosity and has steered me toward exploring the intriguing parallels that unite the realms of creative expression and technical execution in both film and software development.
I’m enjoying the ride so far and hope to see you all along the way. </fin>
